What I Have Learned From This Semester in Creating My Wix Portfolio

Benefits

1. How do you think your English writing skills have improved after completing this Wix e-portfolio? (You can talk about your improvement in these aspects: vocabulary, grammar, writing skills, motivation and confidence in writing, and interaction with peers.)

In the composition class, I have learned different online word-searching tools like the Oxford living dictionary and Linggle. I would try to substitute words often used and change them into synonyms to improve my writing skills while I was writing. Also, by discussing with peers and the professor, they will give me useful suggestions to help me clear my organization and express meaning in a more specific way. After a year of training, I am no longer afraid of writing in English and become more confident in comprehending the organization of each different type of academic essay.

2. What do you think about creating the Wix e-portfolio for the final essay drafts?

Posting final essay drafts on Wix can help me collect all my works in one single webpage, and I can easily show my portfolio to others through the Internet. I also gain a great sense of achievement to see my improvement from beginning to now. Although several previous works still require a large room to improve, I can see my writing skill become more and more mature, and it is also reflected in the feedback I have received.

3. What do you think about creating the Wix e-portfolio for journal writing and commenting?

Writing about interesting things and experiences in life helps me collect these valuable memories in college, and these journals reflect the other side of my life which may not be easily known by others. Although nowadays people tend to use Instagram to share their life, I still believe that creating your own page is a good way for sharing and making friends.

4. Do you think that journal writing should be conducted in the same way as essay writing (i.e., Draft 1, peer review, Draft 2, conferencing, and Draft 3 on Wix)? Why or why not?

Considering different writing purposes, journal writing tends to share daily feelings or experiences in life, and essay writing is for academic purposes. Writing journals does not as complex as writing essays which required rigorous revisions step by step. Therefore, I think only posting the final journal is good enough.

 5. What did you benefit from TA feedback after you posted each final essay draft and journal on your Wix e-portfolio? (TA feedback was presented via Excel file and PPT slides).

While I am trying to arrange the background color and content on my page, I can only focus on my own creation rather than reading the page from the reader’s perspective. TA may tell me the words and the color seem to be mixed with each other, or the arrangement of each paragraph seems to be hard for the readers to read easily. This feedback and suggestions help me review my design and improve the reader's accessibility.

6. What did you benefit from conducting self-assessment and peer-assessment of the Wix e-portfolio in the second semester?

I review my design to know which lacks improvement (misspelling vocabulary and color decision) or which page I haven’t designed yet from my peers and self-assessment sheet.

7. How did this Wix e-portfolio enhance your skills other than writing?

The training in creating Wix e-portfolio improve my digital aesthetics skills and the ability to create my own page. I learned how to present pictures and words in a more appealing way to attract readers’ eyes. Also, I learned how to create a website to show myself. Regardless of different purposes, showing work collections or simply sharing personal experiences, these abilities are all very useful in the digital era.

8. Overall, what did you benefit from creating and managing this Wix e-portfolio? How is it different from uploading your assignments on ecourse2?

I think the biggest difference between uploading the final draft on Ecourse 2 and posting it on Wix is that I show the ability to present myself. In most composition classes, professors may not ask students to present their works on the Internet. However, we have learned both writing skills and the ability to create our own page in this class. I also learned that the purpose of writing essays is not only for the grade but also for showing our own ability to present ourselves.

Challenges

1. What difficulties have you encountered in terms of creating and editing your Wix e-portfolio over these two semesters?

During these two semesters in designing the page, I think I have faced many difficulties like how to arrange the pictures and words in a clear way and how to choose the background color to make my page appealing but not hard to read. Also, there are many functions on Wix I haven’t tried yet because it requires a lot of time and energy.

2. Among all the difficulties mentioned above, what was the most challenging one? How did you handle this challenge?

The most challenging difficulty is how to choose the background color. For a person who is a perfectionist like me, finding a good background color to make your page look appealing and interesting can always be a complex problem. After many times of trying and suggestions from others, I learn how to choose the background. For example, I usually use a brighter color with a simple pattern or scenery as my background.

3. Will you continue to use or write posts on this Wix e-portfolio in the future? Why or why not?

In the future, if I have a chance, I will definitely keep writing in my free time to present another side of my life. For me, writing is interesting, and I like to read others’ feedback to interact with them. Besides, Wix is an easy tool for creating a website to show yourself.
